Appear’s X20 Platform enables visually lossless video contribution with sub-frame latency and full path redundancy for TVTEL’s centralised VAR operation

Appear ASA (Appear, OSE:APR), a global leader in live production technology, and Transmisiones Televisivas TVTEL Limitada, the integrated producer of Chilean professional football broadcasts and operator of the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) VAR system, today announced the deployment of the X20 Platform as the core of centralised VAR signal transport in Chile.

TVTEL deployed Appear’s X20 Platform to transport live match feeds between the Machasa production centre where signals from Chile’s top flight Campeonato Nacional matches converge, and its centralised VAR facility in Macul. Under this configuration, multi-camera signals from each match are transported simultaneously and in sync to the review rooms, where VAR officials work on checking refereeing decisions using the EVS Xeebra system.

“VAR operations depend on frame integrity, synchronisation and image quality, with reviews often completed within seconds. Appear’s X20 Platform gives us the low-latency, resilient video transport needed to support fast and accurate reviews without disruption or signal degradation. This deployment is an important step in centralising VAR operations in Chile and delivering the reliability required by the ANFP and its clubs.” – Rodrigo Peralta Vásquez, General Manager, TVTEL.

The X20 Platform’s modular architecture gives TVTEL the density and operational consolidation required for centralised video contribution. By concentrating the processing, switching and IP gateway functions for a high number of channels within a compact chassis, the deployment simplifies operation and centralised control.

Within this architecture, JPEG XS compression (ISO/IEC 21122) enables the contribution of professional-grade video with sub-frame delay and visually lossless quality, preserving the detail needed for the review of decisions such as offside and goal-line reviews.

Seamless redundancy is provided through diverse paths with SMPTE ST 2022-7 protection. If one route is lost, the signal is still delivered to the VAR room without interruption or frame loss. The X20’s IP interfaces also include firewall-grade protection and encryption support, a critical requirement for live sports content subject to anti-piracy protection.

The infrastructure also provides scalability towards UHD and remote production, supporting REMI workflows and higher-resolution formats without the need to redesign the network for new services.

“Officials need confidence that the pictures they are reviewing are delivered consistently and at the quality that decision reviewing demands. TVTEL has built an ambitious centralised VAR operation for Chilean football, and we are proud that the X20 Platform provides the video transport foundation behind it.” – Luis Perez, Sales Director LATAM, Appear

The deployment forms part of TVTEL’s investment programme for the production of Chilean professional football and operation of the ANFP’s VAR system. It also strengthens TVTEL’s position as a provider of video production and transport services in Chile and international markets.
